Description
- Denver is the largest metropolitan area in the Rocky Mountain region. It acts as a corridor to the Rocky Mountains via US 70. Denver gives the traveler the ability to partake in numerous outdoor activities while staying in a metropolitan environment. Nearby attractions include the scenic drive on Mount Evans, the ski areas of Loveland and Winter Park and the beginning (or end) of the Colorado Trail. Denver also has a number of city and state parks within its boundaries. The Denver Greenway Trail extends 20 miles north through the city from Chatfield State Park.In addition to the recreation facilities mentioned above Denver contains many cultural attractions. Visitors can learn about life in the American West through a visit to the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, Denver Museum of Natural History, Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado State Capitol or the Molly Brown House. These are only a few of the many high-quality cultural and historical institutions in the metro area. A visit to one or a few makes any visit to the area complete.
Recreation - Bicycling (mountain and road), climbing (rock, alpine and ice), kayaking, hiking, fishing and sightseeing opportunities are available in or around Denver. Along with these activities, the visitor should take in the atmosphere of this rejuvenating city. LoDo or Lower Downtown Denver has become a hot spot for sporting events and shopping. Its a good area to gather the feel of the largest city in the Rocky Mountains. Climate - Denver generally has a mild climate. But remember that like any mountainous environment, the weather can change unexpectedly. Known as the "Mile-High City," Denver's elevation contributes to the long winters experienced in the area. Because the city is landlocked in the center of the country the humidity is low. This makes the cold weather bearable. The Rocky Mountains see many sunny days throughout the year. On the average the sun shines over 250 days out of the year. This makes the enduring the winter precipitation easy and, to many residents, enjoyable. Location -
Denver is located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains at the junction of U.S. 25 and U.S. 70. The South Platte River flows through the center of the city. Sand Creek, Cherry Creek and Clear Creek contribute to the waters of the South Platte and form distinct areas of the city.
