Description
- The Blue River is a Gold Medal fishery, and one of the most scenic rivers in Colorado. This is a tail water and the controlled flows combined with Mysis Shrimp from Dillon Reservoir make for an outstanding fishery. Although the dam makes for awesome fishing, it limits how great the whitewater can become. But the Blue has two gorgeous runs that can have some exciting whitewater action.
Recreation - The Blue River can be fished in the 10 miles of public access from the Dillon Reservoir Dam to the Green Mountain Reservoir. The section directly below Dillon Reservoir, in the town of Silverthorne, is the most popular year-round tail water in the area, especially for larger fish. Trout grow large here because of the abundance of Mysis shrimp, which are a great source of protein, coming out of the reservoir. There is also excellent winter fishing on the midge hatch in this section. The river freezes downstream at about the five-mile mark starting in mid to late December. Between late March and November the entire river fishes well. River access is clearly marked by the Division of Wildlife signs and at parking areas. There are also National Forest easements. Colorado Highway 9 runs parallel to the river. Climate - The Blue River is situated in high mountainous altitudes. Persons coming from lower elevations should be aware that time is needed to adjust to the higher elevations. Warm days and cool to freezing nights can be expected in the mountains during the summer. July and August are usually the warmest months. During this time afternoon thunderstorms are common. Be prepared for both warm and chilly weather, as well as for rain showers. Being at high elevation and fueled mainly by melting snow, the Blue is a rather cold river. During the spring runoff the river is full of freshly melted snow, and the temperature of the water is especially cold. Please, make sure that you dress appropriately when participating in whitewater sports. Wear shoes that can protect feet if you bounce off rocks or walk out of a canyon in the event of an accident. Wet suits are mandatory when air and water temperature added together total 100 degrees or less. If the total is less than 80 degrees, a full set of waterproof or wool garments on top of the wet suit should be worn. Location -
The Blue River runs from the Dillon Reservoir Dam, just above the town of Silverthorne, to the confluence with the Colorado River at Kremmling. Highway 9 runs along the length of the river and it can be accessed by Interstate 70 west out of Denver to the town of Dillon.
