Description - Havenwoods State Forest encompasses 237 acres surrounded by the urban city of Milwaukee. Having once been the site of a farm, a city landfill, a corrections facility, and an Army missile site, the healing land includes 40,000 tree plantings, wildflower plantings, prairie restoration, pond site, and several miles of nature trail. An environmental education center has been constructed providing outdoor awareness programs for the greater Milwaukee region.
Attractions
- Located in the midst of Milwaukee, Havenwoods State Forest provides an oasis of natural green space. The Department of Natural Resources obtained the land in the late 1970s restoring the tract to a natural habitat while providing essential environmental education programs and multi-use trails for educators, youth groups, families and adults. The Environmental Awareness Center features several meeting and classrooms, a resource library and an auditorium. Visitors will see live tanks housed with native aquatic life, a natural history exhibit for children, and a small gift and bookshop area. Programs are held on a regular basis; call the Forest office for details. Nearly seven miles of trails explore restored communities including a self-guided nature trail that has an accompanying brochure. Bikers can explore 2.3 miles of paved and limestone pathway while cross-country skiers use 2.5 miles of trail during winter. A variety of gardens exist at the Havenwoods State Forest including a children's garden, organic garden, herb garden, and ethnic garden.
