General Information

Description - Professional fisherman Bill Dance was brought in to help the Forest Service build Lake Okhissa, the deepest lake in Mississippi. The levee system is the tallest in the US Forest Service and Okhissa is the first Forest Service lake designed and maintained for the primary function of growing fish. Okhissa Lake opened in November 2007. Okhissa sports over 34 miles of shore line, is over 80 feet deep in places and is open to pleasure boating, world class fishing, and swimming. The Forest Service prospectus is calling for lake side cabins and primitive tent camping in the future. The deep waters are perfect for small mouth bass. Smallies, as their called, are not typically found this far south. They demand much cooler water than Mississippi can provide and the farther south you travel the closer you get to the beach. That means flat land. The Okhissa Lake area has some of the most beautiful hills and streams in the south. This special area, with its steep crevassed forest is what has allowed for the water’s depth.

Attractions - Lake Okhissa sports over 34 miles of shore line, is over 80 feet deep in places and is open to pleasure boating, world class fishing, and swimming. Nearby is Clear Springs Recreation Area. This national forest recreation site is just 5 miles west of meadville and offers a veriety of recreational activities.

Recreation - Okhissa sports over 34 miles of shore line, is over 80 feet deep in places and is open to pleasure boating, world class fishing, and swimming. The Homochitto RV Park is open year-round and can accommodate up to 20 full size RVs. This park also has room for tent camping. Three miles from the lake are The Boonedocks Cabins which are available for rental. Also Nearby is Clear Springs Recreation Area. This national forest recreation site offers primitive and RV camping, day use areas, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and a historic pavilion.

Climate - Mississippi lies mainly in the subtropics. The climate is mild with the coldest months experiencing low temperatures near 40 degrees F. Summer temperatures frequently reach 100 degrees F, with coastal breezes providing cooling relief. Humidity is highest in August and September reaching an average close to 90%. The highest rainfall comes during the spring months, but December and January are wet, too. Expect temperatures in the northeastern region to be somewhat cooler than the rest of the state.

Location - Okhissa Lake is a little over five miles south of Bude, MS. From Bude take Old Us-84 toward Main St and head south on US-98 for 3.1 miles and turn left at Bude Tower Rd and the lake is about a mile down the road.
