Jones Gap State Park
Description - Trailside camping in one of South Carolina's most pristine wilderness areas in the Upcountry can be enjoyed at this 3,346-acre park. Located in the 10,000-acre Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, this park encompasses the Middle Saluda River, designated the state's first scenic river. In addition, the park is an access point to the Foothills Hiking Trail. More than 400 species of flora including rare and endangered plants and state record trees, are also found here. The park's Environmental Education Center offers nature exhibits and a lab area. Portions of the old Cleveland Fish Hatchery have been restored and are stocked with trout for observation only.

The park offers 52 miles of easy to strenuous hiking trails in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Trailside camping is allowed at 23 designated trail sites, with a permit. Enjoy fishing in the Middle Saluda and Matthews Creek for brook, spotted and rainbow trout.

Recreation - Jones Gap offers opportunities for wilderness hiking and backcountry camping, fishing, viewing nature and wildlife, visiting the environmental education center, and viewing interpretive sites.

Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.

Location - Jones Gap State Park is located in the mountains of very northwestern South Carolina. The park is 25 miles northwest of Greenville off US Highway 276 and 11 miles northwest of Marietta.

Report: We winter hiked the Coldspring trail out from Caesars Head, and hiked the Bill Kimball back to the parking lot. Total of about 4.5 miles and it took 2 hours and 45 minutes. A great trail anybody can handle, but be careful in one spot on the Bill Kimball which is almost rock climbing. Very strenuous for a short distance. Great views and well worth the effort.

Report: We did an easy hike that follows the Saluda river up to a really cool waterfall. Take a map, although the trails are marked, some of the spurs are quite long. The area is beautiful. Don't forget to stop by the little fishery near the park office. The parking area is small and they only allow enough onto the park, in the spring and fall you may wait in line in your car, so get there early. Absolutely worth the drive and wait.
